ST MARYS SCHOOL PERSUASIVE WRITTING
This is a number of letters written by the pupils of St Marys School Douglas, who had to do a project on persuasive writting and decided on Poachers Pocket, they had access to articles etc, and talked to some residents of Ballasalla. The letters are unedited as I think they should stay as the children wrote themI thank them for their excellent and hard work. Just one thought when reading these they are from the  Manx adults of the future.

I do not think that the developers should be building on Poachers Pocket as it is a beautiful site and it is a flood plain, the houses are in danger of flooding I mean think of all the people just sitting inside watching television and then water just leaks in, what about the babies? THEY MIGHT DROWN!!! Once they do build on Poachers Pocket they will be cutting down loads and loads of trees and that means hurting or killing wildlife especially bats, talking about bats, the Government had signed up to save them and now there going against it hasn’t the Government always been so loyal at sticking to what they’ve started?

In 1982 27th September there was a flood so who says it can’t flood again? The flood then devastated many residents and I can tell you they will be devastated again.

In Silverburn many people like to look out their window in the morning and see these beautiful trees, think about the people, would you like to see nice elegant trees or brick houses? Think about it choose the best one.

It also clashes with the Silverburn trail think about walking through and then you come tumbling in to houses because of this not many people will go on the trail and if they do they won’t have any fun.

Ballasalla was described as the most beautiful picturesque part of the island and as it has no beach it has lots of natural beauty.

The Government disagreed to the application 7 times and this time for some reason agreed to this particular one. Why build houses there if so many people don’t want them to?

I don’t think that poacher’s pocket should be built on because our island is beautiful but it is getting wasted because the developers are cutting the trees down and spoiling beautiful views if they spoil these beautiful views all you will see is lots of houses which won’t be very nice . They did only say that they would only cut down three trees but they have killed a lot more think about the environment. They are not thinking about the environment because they are cutting down the trees so the bats and birds have no where to live which is not fair would you like it if this happened to you ?
Every where on the island has a beach but Ballasalla does not so children don’t have any where to play so they go to poacher’s pocket to relax and have some peace and quite time. But now the developers are deciding to cut down every thing and make houses and they are wasting the environment. If you go to poacher’s pocket now you can’t hear birds sing any more or go for long walks with your family.
The children that live by poacher’s pocket used to come and make swings on the trees and climb trees when they play hide and seek there used to be very good hiding places but there isn’t now.
The isle of man said that thy would care for the bats but if they are cutting down trees then they are really killing them there is no green land any more so now it’s just all houses.
The only reason developers are building houses is because they get lots of money for it and shop keepers get more people in and the school get more children. I would advise you to never buy a house there because it will probably flood again knowing it flooded in 1982.
The developers said that poacher’s pocket wasn’t a flood area when they went back to the uk and then came back over here they said it was they keep saying that they will build a barrier to stop floods but before they chopped down trees, the trees actually sucked up water to stop the floods but there is more of a chance its going to flood again.
However it’s also a terrible idea who would do such a terrible thing?

Raven hill resources should not build on such a beautiful site like this one you wouldn’t like it if we build a lot of houses on your door step . The wildlife will get killed all those birds and animals will be homeless and also the endangered species of bats . Do we want evil morons to destroy a beautiful part of nature?

Raven Hill Resources shouldn’t kill those trees because they acted like a flood defense for the people if we got those trees destroyed the river will over flow and will flood the houses what about those pesky tax insurances you have to pay for do you want to pay for the work of those pesky and false developers . You built the ground higher massive splashes of water versus probably poorly built ground walls do you even care about the people or just about the money?

The residents use to love having a nature walk the building just spoils it. If you had a walk when they built the houses it wouldn’t be pleasant would it . When you relax in your home thats the same with poachers pocket would you like it if we destroyed your home? Now it’s your decision would you like a beautiful place like this destroyed?

Dear Ravenhill Resources

I would like ask why you have lied to the last inspector;

You did say that only 3 trees would be killed so far at least 73 have been killed and many more. In fact by my count 150 odd will be pick’en daisies. The bats, birds, bugs, children, babies and their mothers will not be able to enjoy the natural beauty.

And in addition to this we have a international agreement that we have to protect the bats.

In a third world country this wouldn’t be allowed. Furthermore 791 ‘‘mysteriously’‘ disappeared. I think thats pretty suspicious if you ask me. This complaint is not just because of us, its also to help the animals that can’t talk. In 1982 a flood flooded the other end and destroyed most of the houses, how are you going to stop that happening again?

P.S. I’m against it.

Tom Washington.

I do not think Poacher’s pocket site should be built, Poacher’s pocket is a beautiful area full of trees and wildlife. It is a fun area for children to play on, why build house’s on that attractive place? If the developers do build house’s on Poacher’s pocket site they will have to kill loads of trees and lots of wildlife live in trees especially Bats and the government has signed up to save the Bats and now they have gone against that why? I think it is very strange that they disagreed to the application seven and now they think they are going to agree to the 8th application.

It is a flood plain so the house’s are in danger of flooding so why would they build on that particular spot , why couldn’t they just build on a area where nobody uses? And on the 27th September 1982 there was a flood that did upset lots of residents that used to live there they lost most of their precious things so I don’t see the reason of building Poacher’s pocket site, it’s probably just all for profit !

Most people like to wake up and hear the bird’s singing and see the beautiful green trees when they look out of their windows , but if they build Poacher’s pocket when they look out of their windows in the morning they will just see more house’s. Also think about if it’s a lovely sunny day and you want to go on the silverdale trail and then in the middle of the trip house’s show up that wouldn’t be a very good trip would it ? Surely the government will make the right decision . But why would the developer’s build on that green nature spot?
