Remembering A Farming Stalwart

Jack Kelly, who has died at the age of 87, lived all his life in Malew parish spending his last few weeks in Abbotswood Nursing Home, Ballasalla.

He was born at Silverburn Farm and farmed there and at Ballanank and Ballachrink, where he established the reputation of being an excellent livestock farmer. After his retirement in 1968 he continued to keep cattle and became an agent for a seed firm.

Jack married Hilda Jones, a farmer’s daughter from Ballakewan, Ballasalla, and had five children, David, Howard, Michael, Maureen and Ann.

Jack served on the Malew committee of the Manx Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals and in the war was a sergeant in the Home Guard.

His funeral service in Malew Parish Church was well attended and conducted by the Reverend Michael Roberts. The eulogy was delivered by the President of Tynwald Noel Cringle, OBE.

 Hilda Kelly died in 2002.
